What Type of Drywall Sheet is Best for You?

Some of the most popular drywall materials used include:

Standard Drywall Moisture-Resistant Drywall Fire-Resistant Drywall Soundproof Drywall Specialty Drywall Specialty Drywall Finishes

  • Regular Gypsum Board: This material is the most common type of drywall used in residential construction. Ideal for most standard interior walls and ceilings in dry areas, the material is made of a core of gypsum, sandwiched between two sheets of heavy paper.
  • Lightweight Drywall: This material is easier to handle and install compared to standard boards. It provides the same performance while weighing less. If ease of installation is a priority, this material is perfect for you.

  • Moisture-Resistant Board (Green Board): This material is equipped with a special water-resistant core and is covered with a moisture-resistant paper. "Green Board" is typically green in color which is where the nickname stems from. This material is designed to withstand high humidity and perfect for rooms like bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms.
  • Blue Board: Specially designed for veneer plaster applications, this material is moisture resistant. The surface provides a strong bond made to accept plaster and is often used in areas where a smooth finish is desired.

  • Fire-Resistant Board (Type X): This material is made with special additives to enhance its fire-resistance properties. It has a thick core and is tested for its ability to withstand fire for a certain amount of time. This material is ideal for garage walls, utility rooms, or any area where fire safety may be a concern.
  • Type C Drywall: This material contains additional glass fibers, enhancing its performance in fire-resistance compared to its similar Type X. It is used in walls and ceilings where higher fire ratings are required.

  • Soundproof Board (Acoustic Board): This material is designed with added layers that reduce sound. It is often labeled as soundproof or acoustic drywall as it is denser than regular drywall. This material is perfect for home theaters, music rooms, or shared walls in multi-family homes.

  • Flexible Drywall (Bendable Board): This material is best suited for curved walls or architectural features as it is thinner and more flexible. This is often made of gypsum and specialty fibers. This material can create desired arches, rounded corners, or other custom designs to ensure your unique style is showcased in your home.
  • Sheathing Board: Primarily used for exterior applications, this material provides a strong support and a base for siding material. It can come with a moisture-resistant layer.
